How to Hire a Full Stack Developer for Your Startup
By Muhammad Zaid ·
How to hire a full stack developer for a startup: what skills to look for, freelance vs agency vs in-house, hiring remote developers from Pakistan, and interview questions.
What a startup needs from a full stack developer
Early-stage startups need someone who can make sensible technical decisions quickly and ship: design the database, build the API and interface, set up authentication and payments, and deploy. Product sense — knowing what to leave out — matters as much as coding skill.
Skills to look for
- ▹Frontend: React and Next.js with TypeScript.
- ▹Backend: Node.js or NestJS, REST or GraphQL APIs.
- ▹Databases: PostgreSQL and/or MongoDB, with good schema design.
- ▹Auth and payments: JWT/OAuth, roles, Stripe subscriptions.
- ▹Deployment: Vercel, AWS, or GCP, with CI/CD.
- ▹Increasingly: AI integration with OpenAI, Claude, or Gemini.
Freelancer, agency, or in-house?
A freelancer is usually the fastest and most cost-effective way to build an MVP, with direct communication. An agency offers more people but more overhead. An in-house hire makes sense once you have product–market fit and a long roadmap.
Hiring remote developers from Pakistan
Pakistan has a large pool of experienced software developers who work in English and collaborate with clients worldwide. Working hours overlap well with the UK, Europe, and the Gulf, and partially with North America. As with any hire, judge on shipped work, communication, and references rather than location.
Interview questions that reveal real experience
- ▹Walk me through a product you built end to end. What would you do differently?
- ▹How would you structure the database for our product?
- ▹What would you cut from our MVP, and why?
- ▹How do you handle authentication, secrets, and security?
- ▹How do you deploy, and how do you roll back a bad release?
- ▹How do you keep a non-technical founder updated?
Set the engagement up for success
- ▹Start with a small paid milestone to test working together.
- ▹Keep the code repository and cloud accounts in your company's name.
- ▹Agree on weekly demos and a shared task board.
- ▹Document decisions so future hires can pick up quickly.
