How to Build a Business Website That Ranks on Google and Brings Leads

By Muhammad Zaid ·

Step-by-step guide to building a business website: planning pages, choosing a platform, technical SEO, speed, and turning visitors into enquiries.

1. Start with goals and pages

Decide what the website must achieve — calls, form enquiries, bookings, or sales — and who the visitors are. Then plan pages around what people search: a homepage, one page per main service, an about page, project or case study pages, FAQs, and a contact page.

A single "Services" page listing everything rarely ranks well. Separate service pages give each service its own title, content, and chance to appear in search.

2. Choose the right platform

WordPress, Wix, and Webflow are quick for simple sites. A custom Next.js website is a strong choice when speed, SEO control, security, and future features such as booking, portals, or AI chatbots matter. Next.js renders pages on the server, which helps both performance and indexing.

3. Get technical SEO right from day one

  • ▹Unique title and meta description for every page.
  • ▹One clear H1 per page that says what the page is about.
  • ▹XML sitemap and robots.txt.
  • ▹Canonical URLs and HTTPS on one preferred domain.
  • ▹Structured data (schema markup) for your business, services, and FAQs.
  • ▹Descriptive image alt text and compressed images.
  • ▹Internal links between related services, projects, and FAQs.

4. Make it fast and mobile-first

Most visitors arrive on phones. Optimise images, avoid heavy scripts, and test with Google PageSpeed Insights. Good Core Web Vitals help rankings and directly reduce the number of people who leave before the page loads.

5. Design for conversion

  • ▹A clear headline that says what you do and for whom.
  • ▹Proof: projects, real testimonials, and examples of work.
  • ▹A visible call to action on every page.
  • ▹Short forms that ask only for what you need.
  • ▹Optional AI chatbot to answer questions outside business hours.

6. Launch, measure, and improve

Connect Google Search Console and analytics, submit your sitemap, and watch which searches bring impressions. Improve pages that appear in search but get few clicks, and add content for questions customers keep asking.
